Inlay is the timeless craft of embedding contrasting materials, often different wood species, metals, or shells into a wooden or stone surface to create stunning decorative patterns and accents. The Taj Mahal in India is a prime example of this art form but we’ll practice it on wood.
In this introductory class, you’ll learn the essential techniques for creating your own inlay. You’ll explore how to select materials, prepare the host surface, and cut and fit intricate pieces with precision. Starting with simple geometric patterns, you’ll practice using sharp chisels to achieve clean, seamless results.
The class also covers methods for setting inlays securely and sanding or finishing your piece to reveal its striking contrasts. Whether you’re looking to enhance your woodworking skills or add elegance to your projects, this hands-on course will inspire you to incorporate the beauty of inlay into your craft.
Your instructor will provide the following:
- cherry, walnut, and maple wood
- hand tools like X-acto knives
- planes
- chisels
- sanders
- sandpaper
- food grade finishing oil
- pencils
- tracing paper
- calipers
- bluetooth speakers
- For design-led workshop – router, bits, and anti-static vac.
Students are asked to bring:
- seasonally appropriate clothing
- closed toe shoes
- anything else you might find inspiration from, or cool objects!
- bubble wrap or cardboard boxes to carry home the work
- pencils and erasers
- sketchbook
- tools you own that you would be unhappy without
- water bottle
- Cool playlist if you got one
