What’s the quintessential travel project? Socks! Learn to knit your own the traditional way—just in time for spring and summer adventures. In this class, you’ll create a pair of ankle socks designed especially for first-time sock knitters.
In a small, supportive setting, you’ll learn how to knit heel tabs, turn heels, pick up stitches, work the gusset, shape symmetrical toe decreases, and graft toes closed—without seams. While you won’t complete the full pair in class, you’ll leave with one sock well underway, having successfully turned a heel and begun the gusset.
What makes this class different? The pattern uses worsted-weight yarn, which is much easier for beginners to manage than traditional sock yarns. You’ll also learn helpful heel-turning tricks to keep you on track, troubleshoot common fitting issues, and receive a sock-sizing chart to help you create a custom fit.
With plenty of individual support and guidance, you’ll gain the confidence and skills to finish your socks at home—and discover the luxurious difference between handmade socks and store-bought ones.
Your instructor will provide the following:
Enough lovely merino yarn to complete the project, the pattern, my helpful sock-sizing chart, and heel and toe reinforcing yarn.
Students are asked to bring:
- One set double pointed needles in size US 5 [3.75mm] double pointed needles, 6” in length OR circular needle size US 5 long enough to accommodate the magic loop technique
- Locking stitch markers (two for decreases and one contrasting marker for beginning of round)
- Water
Since your class runs over the lunch hour, we recommend you bring lunch or click HERE to learn about local eating opportunities.
