Introduction to Band Weaving: Plain Weave on an Inkle Loom

Inkle loom weaving is a wonderful and meditative way to start weaving, and is more accessible than you might think! Practiced by numerous cultures for more than 4 centuries, this type of weaving creates long, narrow bands that are versatile and useful. There are many types of textiles that can be created on an Inkle loom, including belts, sashes, bookmarks, pet leashes, and straps.

In this beginner-friendly class, students will learn how to read a threading chart and warp the loom, and will practice basic band weaving skills. You will weave a simple, plain-weave band that could become a lanyard, keychain, or bookmark, depending on what you envision and how long you weave your design. Whether you are a beginner interested in this ancient form of weaving or a fiber artist looking to expand your practice, this class will set you up to make beautiful, versatile bands.

About the Instructor: Beth Mercer

Your instructor will provide the following materials:

• 99% warped loom (warping is not taught in this class but is briefly discussed). Students may choose to check out the class loom to continue weaving at home, with the understanding that a mutually agreed-upon time and place will be arranged for its return.

• shuttle and weft for weaving

• hardware to finish bands as keychains or lanyards

• written instructions

No experience is required.

Age Requirement

Students ages 16 and older are welcome to attend this class. Students ages 16 and 17 may attend without a parent/guardian in attendance as long as MMFS is provided with written parental permission by email to info@marinemillsfolkschool.org.
