———————————————————————-

In this hands-on class, students will learn to carve two simple, functional spoons from pre-axed spoon blanks (already roughed out). The class will begin with tool safety before moving into an introduction to wood selection—covering type, size, and grain orientation. From there, students will learn the systematic removal of material, how to achieve smooth and even surfaces, and how to use different knife grips and cuts to create consistent shavings.

As the class progresses, Stephen will diagram wood grain orientation and demonstrate how spoons are shaped from the log, emphasizing how to follow the natural grain pattern. Each participant will leave with two hand-carved spoons they can use, gift, or continue refining at home.

Your instructor will provide the following:

  • Spoon blanks from birch (two types)
  • Sloyd knives (straight, general craft knife)
  • Hook knives
  • Students will have option to purchase tools used at the end of class (Focuser Carving brand).

Students are asked to bring:

  • If they choose to wear a cut resistant glove, they would have to bring their own. I teach to safely carve without gloves.
  • Since your class runs over the lunch hour, we recommend you bring a lunch or click HERE to learn about local eating opportunities.
