Learn how to knit traditional stranded colorwork using what is known in the Nordic countries as “peasant knitting.” Working in the round with two colors at a time, knitters of old held one color in each hand, knitting as they led the cows back to the barn or wandered down to the docks, hoping to spy their beloved fisherman returning with a bountiful catch.

Students will be knitting a cowl using traditional Scandinavian patterns which was designed specifically as an entry-level class for the skill of stranding. Since there are no more than five stitches between color changes, the students need not worry about securing floats, and the use of a 16” circular needle eliminates the need to fuss with double pointed needles or magic loops.

Class size will be small and the atmosphere will be relaxed and friendly. Learning new knitting techniques requires learning new motor skills, so be prepared to be gentle and patient with yourself as you learn, and be ready to ask for help when you need it. Your questions are expected and welcomed!

A supply kit is provided by the instructor and includes the pattern and enough high quality, next-to-skin-soft wool to complete the project.

Skill Level
Students must be comfortable casting on, knitting, and binding off. It is helpful, though not required, to be familiar with both Continental and English methods of knitting and working in the round. Students in this class should already have successfully completed a number of single-color projects.

Students Should Bring To Class
Circular needles size US 7 [4.5 mm] in 16” [40 mm] length, stitch markers.
