Coiling has been utilized for centuries by many cultures to create basketry, often with plant fibers. In honor of Earth Day, we will put a modern spin on this craft, using plastic shopping bags (that so often get thrown away) as the filler for our coils. We will also use various yarns to do the wrapping, allowing students to create a colorful design. You can even bring your own yarns from home — it’s a great way to upcyle your stash!.
During class, you can create a flat trivet or a small shallow bowl that is perfect for containing small items around the house. You can continue making your item larger at home or start a new bowl, tray, or even a rug! The possibilities are endless. You will love making coiled projects and finding ways to turn your cache of plastic bags into something beautiful and useful.
Your instructor will provide the following materials:
- Colorful yarns and macrame cords
- Large-eye needle
- Plastic bags
- Printed pattern
Students are asked to bring:
- Feel free to bring your own yarns and plastic bags from home.
- As your class is scheduled over a lunch hour, we highly recommend you bring a lunch or click here to learn about local eating opportunities in the area.
