Learn to Play Scandinavian Allspel (Ages 16+) May 11, 2024

This workshop will focus on learning favorite Scandinavian allspel tunes. Allspel tunes are recognized widely known tunes that are  commonly played at Scandinavian music festivals overseas and here in the Upper Midwest, such as the upcoming annual Duluthstämman Scandinavian Music Festival.  Polska, schottis, vals, polkett, and gånglåt will be shared with a special focus on rhythm.  All acoustic instruments are welcome.  No matter where you are on your Scandinavian music journey you are welcome to join or come and listen.

About the Instructor:  Renee Vaughan specializes in playing traditional Scandinavian music on the nyckelharpa, Sweden’s national folk instrument.  With a prestigious fellowship from the American Scandinavian Foundation, Renee learned traditional play from under her mentor, Swedish master musician Cajsa Ekstav.  From performances at esteemed venues like the American Swedish Institute and Høstfest to her recent role as Musician-in-Residence at UW-Madison’s Center for Nordic Folklife, Renee’s collaborations foster cultural connections and appreciation for  Nordic folk music.  www.reneevaughan.com

Your instructor will provide the following:

• Scandinavian Allspel Tunes and sheet music at the end of the session

Students are asked to bring:

• Acoustic instrument. Students will need to bring a recording device if they want sound files to take home.

Skill Level 
Must have ability to play your instrument at beginner level. Tunes will be taught by ear and sheet music will be available at the end of the session. You are also welcome to come listen and learn about Scandinavian Allspel. You can make recordings and learn at your own pace at home.

Age Requirement
Adults and teens. Students ages 16-17 can register with parent permission, which you can give by email to info@marinemillsfolkschool.org.
