Fred livesay helps a student in spoon carving

Join internationally respected woodworker and craftsman Fred Livesay for this 2-day class focused on knife skills. Students will learn 10 to 14 different knife grips and how to use them effectively for wood carving. In the process you will become comfortable with the use of a knife, safely carving both away and towards yourself. Sharpening knives will be covered. This two-day class will be interspersed with demonstrations of sharpening and the making of certain joints, finials, and other decorative techniques using green and dry wood.

Spend two days with Fred as he shares his approach to knife use and care, “honed” over 40 years teaching and working in the US, Scandinavia and Europe.

Class times: Saturday, April 27, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, April 28, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

This class requires hand strength such as that used to open a tight jar lid.

Students are asked to bring the following required tools:

  • Pencils or gel pens
  • Sharpening tools (Fred will advise)
