Skinnfell

Norwegian Skinnfell entails hand-stitching and wood block printing on tanned sheepskins. Traditionally used for an entire family’s warm bedding on cold winter nights, skinnfell traps were created from muiltiple hides that were carefully stitched together and then decorated with motifs meant to convey good wishes to the receiver. In this introductory class, we will turn a single sheepskin into a bench cover, chair/couch throw, or two chair pads.

In addition to printing with carved blocks from Norway, students will learn how to apply various edging options. Participants will need hand strength to stitch through layers of sheepskin. They may finish stitching at home.

Skinnfell padsYour instructor will provide the following:

  • one tanned sheepskin
  • leather cutters needle
  • thread
  • handout
  • use of wood blocks, binder clips, rollers, trays, skewers, paper towels, etc.

Students are asked to bring:

  • Students are welcome to bring their own tanned sheepskin, which will be evaluated for use in class.
  • Pencil
  • Small sharp scissors
  • Wyeglasses, if needed
  • Clear plastic quilting ruler
  • Binder clips 1⁄2- to 1-inch wide
  • Leather thimble, highly recommended
  • Optional: small jewelry pliers, favorite stamps from home, apron to protect clothing

Instructor will bring equipment to share in class for participants unable to find all the listed items.

*Note that the materials fee will be reduced to $40 for participants who bring a suitable tanned hide to class. Hides will be evaluated at the beginning of class. They need to be soft and flexible in order to handstitch. And the leather side needs to be smooth in order to get good, crisp prints.
