Indigo & Shibori Workshop (ages 16+) – Saturday, October 12, 2024

Come dip into the magical world of indigo and shibori and create a one-of-a-kind linen piece of home decor that can be used as a wall hanging or stunning table runner. In this workshop, you will learn how to make a natural indigo vat + a handful of traditional and contemporary shibori techniques. Shibori is the ancient Japanese form of resist dyeing that creates beautiful designs and patterns.

Your instructor will provide the following:

• Linen
• Flour sack tea towel
• Instructional hand-outs with an organic indigo recipe, best practices, care instructions, shibori techniques and resources.

Students are asked to bring:

• 1-3 pieces from home to dye with natural indigo, students are encouraged to bring items that are stained to over-dye or anything they wish to naturally dye with indigo. Natural fibers only, either cellulose or protein fibers.
• a pair of latex gloves (the yellow kind used for dishes are
  fine.)
• a writing utensil if you like to take notes
• 5-gallon bucket or a dish-tub for transporting your work
• Indigo can be messy – do not wear white shoes unless you want them to be splattered with indigo.
• Wear clothing you do not feel precious about – or you are fine with splashes of indigo landing on.
• An apron is optional, some students prefer to wear an apron.
• We will be working outside, please dress for the weather.
• Your class is scheduled over a lunch hour, we highly recommend you bring a lunch or click here to learn about local eating opportunities in the area.

Skill Level
No experience is needed.

Age Requirement
Students between the ages of 16-18 may attend without a parent/guardian in attendance as long as MMFS is provided with written permission from a parent or guardian by email to info@marinemillsfolkschool.org.
