caned footstool

Get a taste and feel for the heritage craft of chair caning during this one-day basic beginner class. Students will learn the traditional 7-step method of hand caning on a preassembled and lightly stained footstool. We will weave in an easy-to-understand sequence of steps and once the basic techniques are mastered in class, you will be ready to tackle more difficult chair seats. You may go into business for yourself to preserve this traditional craft and nearly lost art form.

Your instructor will provide the following materials:

  • Instructor will provide a kit which includes a 13”L x 9”W x 10”H, assembled and lightly stained hole cane footstool, strand cane for weaving, binder cane, 12 caning pegs, caning awl, color instruction pattern, and handouts.

Students are asked to bring:

  • bath towel
  • dish pan or flat-bottom bowl or small
    bucket for soaking cane
  • scissors
  • As your class is scheduled over a lunch hour, we highly recommend you bring a lunch or click here to learn about local eating opportunities.

Skill Level
Hand dexterity is important, any previous weaving skills are helpful. Be prepared to stand for long periods of time while weaving.
