Create, Connect, Age Well
People are living longer than ever and the world continues to change at an increasingly fast pace. Marine Mills Folk School recognizes how challenging it is to stay physically, mentally and socially strong in this environment. Create, Connect, Age Well is a new folk school experience that helps aging adults thrive in the 21st century. Try something new. Build skills. Be creative. Connect with others looking to live long!

Create, Connect, Age Well will be offered each season as a three-part series that explores different folk school approaches: using our hands, using our voices, moving our bodies, telling stories, sharing food and connecting with the natural world, to name a few. This summer, we will learn wet-on-wet oil painting, explore Tai Chi and dive into the practice of keeping healthy, happy houseplants. Register today!

Each Create, Connect, Age Well session includes:
•    An instructor-led folk school learning experience
•    Social connection and reflection time
•    Coffee, tea and snacks
•    Bonus activities to exercise the brain and stretch the imagination!

This program is made possible through a partnership with Christ Lutheran Church in Marine on Saint Croix. Thank you, CLC!

Session 1: You Can Paint! – June 20, 2024
Painting instructor, Kevin Klein, will guide us through the wet-on-wet oil painting process just like Bill Alexander did on on PBS! Learn to compose a painting, mix colors, use the brush effectively and create something beautiful through a step-by-step process that anyone can learn. Everyone will go home with their own painting. This could be messy – please wear something that won’t be ruined by a little paint!

Session 2: Tai Chi – July 18, 2024
Aimee Van Ostrand from Healing Within Acupuncture & Wellness Studio, will lead us through a slow and gentle session of Tai Chi, the ancient art of movement and mindfulness. Tai Chi has been proven to provide great physical and psychological benefits to people of all ages and can be especially beneficial for adults who have some limitations or just want to stay healthy and strong as they age. Tai Chi is a highly adaptable practice; all abilities are welcome. Please wear comfortable clothing to allow for free and easy movement.

Session 3: Happy Houseplants – August 15, 2024
Not only do houseplants beautify our living spaces, they can also improve air quality, reduce stress, increase a sense of well-being and even support cognitive health. In this session, Amanda Lane, from Collectively Unearthed, leads us through the art and science of happy, healthy houseplants. Learn how to take care of them so they can take care of you! Feel free to bring a plant of your own for advice on its care. Participants will also leave with a few new plants to take home. Come prepared to get your hands dirty with planting and art activities.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
