Boro is derived from the Japanese term ‘Boroboro’ which means something tattered or repaired. In this class, you will learn the ancient and gentle Japanese art of Boro using simple Sashiko stitches. In Boro, mending isn’t meant to be invisible. Part of the beauty of the final product is in the visibility of the process itself.
In this class, we will mend jeans (or any article of clothing) with patches and visible stitches. You will learn the skills to upcycle those jeans with holes and create a whole new, one-of-a-kind garment! Students should bring a pair of jeans or other article of clothing that they want to enhance with decorative mending. A typical pair of jeans takes 10-12 hours of patching and stitching to complete, so obviously this will be an introduction only!
Students are asked to bring:
- Odd pieces of fabric or old, worn clothes can be upcycled to ensure nothing is wasted.
- water or snacks (optional)
Skill Level
No sewing experience needed.
