The class will cover the art and science of keeping bees in northern climates. The class is designed for beekeepers who have established bees but are searching for more information. Through demonstration and discussions students will learn about:
- Honey Bee Diseases and Pests
- Varroa Mite Count demonstration using the powder sugar method to get a baseline of varroa mite levels in the hive
- Treatment plans for sick hives
Your instructor will provide the following:
- 24 years of beekeeping experience – priceless!
- Handout and follow-up email with resources about honey bee diseases and pests
Students are asked to bring:
- Please bring a bee suit and veil to class if you have one. If you don’t have one then you will be able to observe the mite count through the window.
- Bring a snack if needed or click here to learn about local eating opportunities.
Skill Level
The class is geared towards new beekeepers and those with established hives so you can take the information home and apply it to your hives immediately.
Age Requirement
Students ages 10-15 are welcome to attend the class with another registered parent or guardian. Ages 16-17 can register with parent permission, which you can give with an email to info@marinemillsfolkschool.org.
