If you want to try your hand at the art of punch needle rug hooking, this is the class for you.  Starting with a small kit you will make a small punch needle hooked project.

Skills covered will include:

  • Positioning base fabric in the hoop
  • Threading a punch needle and types of punch needles
  • Suitable yarns
  • Drawing (tracing) a suitable design
  • The basics of punching
  • Finishing

Your piece will not be finished during class but all stages of rug hooking will be covered and simple directions for completing your piece will be provided.

Class kits include an Oxford size 10 regular punch needle, monk’s cloth and yarn for the project, stitch gauge and instructions.  Students will use the instructor’s gripper strip frames and covers during class.  These may be purchased from the instructor after class.

Materials that students will need to provide: Small scissors with a pointed tip. Scissors must have sharp point as this is important for finishing your piece.  Rounded point scissors will not work for punch needle rug hooking. No need to bring any additional materials to class.

Skill Level
No experience in any form of rug hooking or punch needle is required to take this class, just a willingness to learn this art form!

Age Requirement
Students between the ages of 16 and 18 may attend without a parent/guardian in attendance as long as MMFS is provided with written parental permission. Email is okay.

Your instructor:  Lori Clark was introduced to the punch needle method of rug hooking she was immediately hooked. She has been sewing since she was a young girl and says she has never met a fiber art she doesn’t enjoy. She is an Oxford Certified Punch Needle Rug Hooking Instructor, and a member of the Oxford Punch Needle Instructors Guild (OPNIG), the American
Association of Traditional Rug Hooking Artists (ATHA) and the American Sewing Guild (ASG). She divides her time between Stillwater and Laporte, Minnesota.
