One of the earliest written descriptions of Shibori dates to 238 CE! Shibori is an ancient Japanese technique that involves folding, twisting, or bunching cloth and then binding it to create brilliant patterns.
In this class, you will learn a variety of these folding techniques. You will use wood boards, clips, rubber bands, and other items to fold fabric into different shapes and create resists. Then you will dip the fabric into indigo dye and watch the pattern develop as it hits the air. You will be amazed at all the incredible patterns you can create!
Your instructor will provide the following materials:
- Dye vat
- Items to create resists
- Each student will receive two cotton tea towels and a soft rayon scarf to dye.
Students are asked to bring:
- You can also bring additional white items to dye if you like. Small items like baby onesies and shirts work best.
- We will wear gloves, but be sure to dress in clothing that can get blue dye on it.
