Sloyd is a Scandinavian word that means being crafty and this class is for the ones who want to think outside the box and make home goods and other kitchen items out of wood.
We’ll have the option to make spatulas, cooking spoons, salad servers, egg cups, hand hewn cutting boards, spoon rests, chopsticks, simple spoon racks, soap dishes, bag clips & clothes pins, peg racks, and more!
Bring your axe, knife, and any other woodworking tools as I’ll be teaching you how to use these tools in all sorts of new ways.
It’s the perfect class for the person who loves being in their kitchen and wants to make customized utensils to fit in your favorite pans, or other kitchen gadgetry!
*Don’t forget to bring your favorite frying pan and other cooking apparatus you want to make tailored utensils for.
The goal of the workshop is to build a relationship with each of the tools we will be using while gaining an understanding of how they work in relation to the timber itself.
This is a great course aimed at both beginners and more experienced wood carvers.
We will be swinging axes and adzes, and using specialty gouges, hook tools, and the humble, but versatile, sloyd knife. This is a very unique opportunity because you will be learning to safely use such a large array of tools while developing techniques which bridge the gap between spoon and bowl carving.
The course will also cover just about all you need to know, including sourcing wood, designing various kitchen tools, learning various knife and tool grips, innovative ways to use tools, decorative carving and painting, learning Alex’s unique and advanced wood carving techniques. We will even discuss tool maintenance.
Alex will be bringing his collection of he as created to use as design examples, and he will have items for sale.
