Hardanger embroidery is named for the Hardanger region of Norway, where this style of embellishing clothing and home goods flourished. Students will create an embroidery design incorporating several traditional stitches and the distinctive cutwork that makes Hardanger embroidery so beautiful.
Stitches will include: kloster blocks, dove’s eyes, corner dove’s eyes, cable stitch, Algerian eyelents, woven bars, wrapped bars, and Maltese cross. Fabrics, needles, threads, and pattern reading will be discussed so students can make informed decisions when taking their skills beyond this project.
