In this fast-paced class, students will learn techniques for needle felting a beautiful, three-dimensional, lifelike bird from Corriedale wool roving, then felting fine detail using merino pre-felt and merino roving.  Participants will learn needle felting basics and techniques to needle felt details and realism in wool. Unique finishing details will render a hanging bird ornament. Participants will complete one bird in class and leave with enough supplies to make a second one on their own.

Felting is older than spinning or weaving and found in many world cultures.  Felting wool means to agitate the fibers so that they bond together into a non-woven fabric or a three-dimensional form. Felting is often accomplished using water, soap and a hand rubbing process (wet felting).  Needle felting (dry felting) involves the use of a sharp, barbed needle and stabbing the wool to connect fibers to build density and form.   Experienced wet felters or those new to the felting craft will both enjoy this fun class on dry felting with our talented instructor, Karen Engelbretson.

A supply kit will include core wool, merino pre-felt, roving and finishing supplies to make two birds, plus needle felting needles, foam block, beading needle, thread, accessory materials, instruction book, and resources list.

Students to bring:

  • Small sharp scissors
  • Optional: needle felting pad and felting needles, if already own

The registration fee for this class includes a material fee of $30.

Please bring water/snacks and lunch if needed, as there are no food facilities at the school.

We’ve changed how each student pays for the material used during each in-person class.  Each registration fee now combines the material fee and the instructor fee.  We’ve made this change based on feedback from instructors and participants: instructors can focus more on teaching their class, and students don’t need to remember to bring the material fee to pay directly to the instructor.

NOTE: Be aware we may cancel class if a minimum number of registrations is not reached. We work to balance teachers’ need to plan for a class with students’ busy schedules — not an easy task. Please register as early as possible!
