Did you know the traditional skill of chair caning dates way back — supposedly King Tutankhamen was buried with a caned settee. Chair caning has been practiced in Asia and Europe for centuries.
Would you like to learn more about chair caning? Do you have one (or more) caned chair seats to replace? Then this is the class for you.
In this class, participants will hand cane a wooden trivet using natural strand cane to learn the chair caning process.
Other topics that will be discussed include:
• the difference between the various types of caning
• the different types of caning materials
• the 7-step method of hand caning
• how to care for caned furniture
• chair caning resources
A Kit (value $25) will be included in the registration fee:
- Trivet frame
- Caning pegs
- Natural strand cane
- Binder cane
- Instruction booklet.
Students will need to bring the following to class:
- Small hand clippers or shears
- 1 or 2 small rags
- Spray bottle
- Bucket or tub (in addition to spray bottle)
- Paper for notes
- Pen or pencil
- Awl or ice pick
Please bring water/snacks, as there are no food facilities at the school.
Please note: We’ve changed how each student pays for the material used during each in-person class. Each registration fee now combines the material fee and the instructor fee. We’ve made this change based on feedback from instructors and participants: instructors can focus more on teaching their class, and students don’t need to remember to bring the material fee to pay directly to the instructor.
NOTE: Be aware we may cancel class if a minimum number of registrations is not reached. We work to balance teachers’ need to plan for a class with students’ busy schedules — not an easy task. Please register as early as possible!
