Skill Level: Some experience in knitting

Gain more experience knitting Nordic-styled decorative mittens, just in time for the holiday season!  Students will knit a miniature mitten(about 4 inches tall) as a Christmas ornament, or knit all 24 for a traditional Advent calendar or garland.  The skills learned on these decorative mittens are great preparation for knitting full size Scandinavian mittens.

OPTION 1 –  Advanced Beginner Knitters – Miniature mitten

This teensy mitten works up in less than half the time of the fancier option. It does not include Nordic colorwork, but does teach all the skills used in a full-sized mitten. Pattern used is “Smitten, (A Holiday Garland)” by Emily Ivey.

This option is designed for advanced beginners.  Knitters must be comfortable knitting, purling, increasing and decreasing. Some experience knitting in the round is helpful, though not required.

Students are expected to bring items on Advanced Beginner Supply List to class.

      • Wool worsted weight weight yarn in one color (or more if desired) Sample uses red and light gray (Only a partial skein is required for one mitten. About 6 or 7 mittens can be made from one full 220 yard skein.)
      • Set of US size 3 double pointed needles or size 3 36” cable needle if magic loop method is preferred
      • Stitch marker
      • Tapestry needle

OPTION 2 – Intermediate Knitter – Mitten Calendar

This stunning Mitten Advent Calendar is knit in the Nordic stranded-colorwork tradition and includes instruction not only on stranding but also on Latvian braid, an embellishment technique that raises your Scandinavian knits up a notch or two. In addition, all the skills required for a full-sized mitten will be learned, making this an ideal first Scandinavian mitten project. Pattern used is “Mitten Advent Calendar” by Kathy Lewinski.

This option is for intermediate knitters comfortable with knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing and knitting in the round using either double pointed needles or magic loop.

Students are expected to bring items on Intermediate Knitter Supply List to class.

      • Wool fingering weight yarn in at least 3 colors. Sample uses red, white, and soft gray (Only a partial skein will be required of each color for a single mitten. About 720 yards will be needed for a full set of 24 mittens.)
      • Set of US size 1 double pointed needles or size 1 36” cable needle if magic loop method is preferred
      • Stitch marker
      • Tapestry needle
