Curious to begin quilting? This class provides your initial taste into this creative world with your knowledgeable guides, Wynn Martin and her helpful quilt-mate, Gloria Mueller. Take your sewing skills and interest to a new level, in this supportive and fun class.
This is a 2-Day class: Saturday, April 6 & Saturday, April 20, 10am-4pm
Each student will make a small quilt suitable for use as a baby quilt or decorative wall hanging. We will use the “Carpenter’s Star” block to create basic quilt components, evaluate color choices and also use basic tools, such as rulers, templates, and rotary cutters. Each student has the option of following the chosen pattern or use the same elements to make their own unique design. By the end of this 2-day class, you will have a partially finished quilt top and the necessary knowledge to complete your project at home.
Session 1: Creating your quilt top
During the first session, you will learn to use a rotary cutter, practice sewing half-square triangles and straight seams, and begin sewing your block together. By the end of this session, you will have the necessary skills to complete your block at home in time for the next class.
Session 2: Adding borders and making a quilt sandwich
Adding a border can be useful when creating a quilt. If nothing else, it adds a decorative touch and helps you fit a quilt top to a desired wall or bed space. During our second class session, you will learn how to correctly measure a border prior to sewing it onto the center block. As the final step, we will review how to prepare the quilt with top, backing and batting so that the quilting process can begin.
Students to bring:
- Sewing machine in good order that you know how to use
- 100% cotton fabric
- 1 yard (light or medium color/ minimal pattern for background)
- 1 yard of a dark fabric that complements your background color
- Basic sewing kit (list will be provided after registration)
- Bag lunch
