In botanical printing, the pigments and tannins in leaves are transferred to paper or cloth with prolonged heat to create prints. No paints, inks or external dyes are needed to create these beautiful monoprints.

In this introductory class you’ll learn the basics of creating leaf prints on paper and binding a simple journal. Your print will be used for the cover of the journal.

Fresh leaves are usually used in botanical printing, but here in Minnesota in November we’ll have to get creative! The instructor will provide dried and/or frozen leaves plus maybe some from the florist.

As our bundles “cook”, we’ll discuss botanical printing procedures in more depth and prepare paper for our journals. A simple pamphlet stitch will be taught, to create a small journal using your print as the cover.

After our bundles steam, we’ll open them, review our results, dry them quickly by ironing, and bind them into a simple journal. They make nice gifts, left blank or maybe after adding some poetry or drawings.

Please note: We’ve changed how each student pays for the material used during each in-person class.  Each registration fee now combines the material fee and the instructor fee.  We now collect the material fee directly based on feedback from instructors and participants: instructors can focus more on teaching their class, and students don’t need to remember to bring the material fee to pay directly to the instructor.

NOTE: Be aware we may cancel class if a minimum number of registrations is not reached. We work to balance teachers’ need to plan for a class with students’ busy schedules — not an easy task. Please register as early as possible!
