Bluebirds are highly desirable backyard residents for their attractive plumage, insectivorous diets, and melodious songs. With the right bluebird house positioned properly to attract tenants, any birder can become a bluebird landlord.
All bluebirds are cavity-nesting species, and they need safe, secure locations to raise their broods. Unfortunately, they are not assertive, and more aggressive species can easily drive bluebirds out of prime nesting spaces.
Join David Westphal as he walks you through building your own Bluebird House for your backyard. Join the many numbers of people who make a safe place for Bluebirds. Students will assemble a Bluebird house from a kit. The house will be completed during this class. Students can paint or stain their house at home.
Bluebirds can face a tough environment: European starlings and house sparrows, both invasive species, will easily usurp nesting cavities, evicting and even injuring or killing bluebirds in the process. Bluebirds may also be subject to brood parasitism from brown-headed cowbirds, and young cowbird chicks can smother bluebird hatchlings and keep them from getting sufficient food and care. Continuing human development, particularly in the eastern bluebird’s range, has removed many natural cavities these birds need for successful nests. Providing proper birdhouses is extremely helpful to their survival, you can help!
This class is intergenerational. David encourages you to bring a child 9 years and older with you at no additional cost, to work on the completion of one bird house. During registration, please indicate in ‘Order Notes‘ the name and age of your special teammate.
Please bring a hammer with you to class. Everything else will be provided in the kit which is included in your Registration Fee (the material fee of $15 is included when you register).
