Skill Level: No Experience Necessary

Have you always wanted to try quilting and found the thought of it intimidating? Are you an experienced quilter and want to polish your skills?  With the guidance of expert quilter Wynn Martin, you will enjoy reviewing the basics and create an oversized block quilt suitable for a baby quilt or wall hanging. We will use the “Carpenter’s Star” block to create basic quilt components, evaluate color choices and also use tools, such as rulers, templates, and rotary cutters. Each student has the option of following the chosen pattern (as shown in picture) or use the same elements to make their own unique design. By the end of this class, you will have a partially finished quilt top and all the skills to finish your unique project at home.

This class is on 2 consecutive Saturdays:  November 16th, and November 23rd 9:00am – 1:00pm each Saturday.

Students to bring:

Material for Quilt:

  • 5/8 yard        Dark cotton fabric
  • 5/8 yard        Light cotton fabric

Fabric should be washed and ironed prior to class. Fabric is pre-washed to assure that colors won’t bleed after the project is sewn.  Fabrics should have high contrast but also complement each other.

Please bring a Basic Sewing Kit:

Must Have:

  • Scissors — both for fabric and for paper
  • Rotary cutter and extra blades (optional but very useful)
  • Pincushion
  • Pins and needles — both hand and sewing machine
  • Needle threader
  • Thread — white, cream, black, and a medium gray are good neutrals to keep on hand
  • Seam Ripper

Add these items as needed for a specific project:

  • Thimble
  • Mechanical pencil and eraser
  • Washable marking pencil(s)
  • Quilter’s marking pencils
  • Pencil sharpener — the double-barreled kind made for sharpening eyeliner pencils works great
  • Fine-tip permanent marker
  • Tape measure
  • Template plastic
  • Washable glue stick
  • Masking tape
  • Stiletto
