Discover the age-old craft of handspinning natural fibers to make your own unique yarns. In ancient times twisting fibers together was the original and only way to create clothing and other textiles. Today artisans and students are exploring hand spinning for a variety of reasons, including economy, use of eco-friendly fibers, creativity and interest in traditional crafts.
This class will be on 2 consecutive days: 9am-2pm Saturday, March 23 & 11am-2pm Sunday, March 24.
Day 1: We will learn the characteristics of animal, plant and man-made fibers, study samples, review spinning terminology, and prepare sheep wool to construct 1-ply yarn using a drop spindle. In addition, we will identify spinning wheel styles, their parts, how they work, and begin to spin using 4 different wheels supplied by the instructor.
Day 2: We will continue to develop our craft by practicing spinning methods on the wheels, construct 2-ply yarns, and finally wind yarn skeins using a Niddy Noddy.
Students should bring:
– Optional: Dog Brush for preparing fiber
– Optional: Drop Spindle or Spinning Wheel – only if you have one
Class will be held at our winter location: Gammelgarden Museum, 20880 Olinda Trail, Scandia, MN 55073
NOTE: Be aware we may cancel 5 days before class date if a minimum number of registrations not reached. We work to balance teachers’ need to plan for a class with students’ busy schedules — not an easy task. Please register as early as possible!
