While basket weaving is one of the widest spread crafts in the history of any human civilization, it is hard to say just how old the craft is, because natural materials like wood and grass decay naturally and constantly. Much of the history of basket making has been lost and is simply speculated upon. The oldest known baskets have been carbon-dated to between 10,000 and 12,000 years old, earlier than any archaeological finds of pottery, and were discovered in Faiyum in upper Egypt.
Instructor Kirsten Skoglund, a basket maker for many years, will share her basket weaving passion with you! In this class, you will create a Market Basket, 8″x 11″ with 6″ high sides and a hardwood handle. Great to take anywhere and carry all your important items in. You will learn basic basket-making techniques using reed. This includes how to lay out the base of the basket, shape the sides and create a very sturdy rim. Kirsten will discuss how to finish your basket, either leaving it natural or staining painting it. There is truly something magical about taking basic supplies from nature and making a functional work of art. You will love this class!
The instructor will bring the weaving supplies for each student to make their basket. She will also have actual basket weaving clippers and basket weaving tools available to buy at the class if desired (please bring your checkbook).
